You probably know that there are two types of health insurance – indemnity health insurance plans and managed care plans. A compensation plan, also commonly called a reimbursement plan, will reimburse you for medical expenses up to a certain limit. With a reimbursement program, the insurance company pays a percentage of the total cost, regardless of the cost. With an indemnity plan, the insurance company will pay a specified amount each day for a specified number of days. The amount reimbursed does not depend on medical expenses, but the amount reimbursed will never exceed your expenses.

Other popular types of health insurance plans are managed care plans. There are three types of managed care plans, namely HMO, POS, and PPO. Managed care plans are more popular than indemnity plans because they offer clients more flexibility and benefits. With these types of options, you can pay monthly, or pay a copay but no monthly fee, no matter how many times you see your doctor. With a managed care plan, you have options for care. The plan you choose and the amount you want to pay determine how large a network of doctors and specialists you can see and still be covered by that plan. Some managed care plans offer sponsorship programs from hospitals and health service networks. You can usually get this type of plan through your employer.

At this point, you might think that managed care plans are better for the average person because they are more cost-effective, and you’d be absolutely right. Indemnity plans, on the other hand, may give you more cost freedom, but you will have to use the health care provider of your insurance company’s choice. This can be a problem if you have a specific disability. A managed care plan will definitely save you money in the long run, especially if you have an emergency while you’re out of town. These types of programs are also more flexible in policy. One thing you need to do is before purchasing any type of health insurance, be sure to research all the options available to you and your family and make the final decision that will protect your life more than anything else.
